Community 5k Celebrates Legacy of Matthew Myers
Matt’s Run, a 5k walk/run, is a growing tradition at Cal Poly Pomona that unites hundreds of participants and volunteers from the university and local community and raises money for scholarships.
The 7th annual Matthew Myers Memorial Scholarship 5k will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. This year, the scholarship endowment will give at least 10 awards, bringing its total to 48 scholarships.
Matt’s Run celebrates the life and legacy of Matthew Myers, a Cal Poly Pomona communications student who died in 2005 after a car struck him on campus. After his death, his family, parents Kevin and Chris and sister Jenna, worked with the university to sponsor an event that would give back to the community as Matt did. Since he loved to run and had a passion to serve others, the family decided that a scholarship 5k would be the best way to honor him.
“Our son was an average student,” Kevin says. “Getting an education wasn’t the only thing in his life. He gave his time considerably. He volunteered at church and for youth activities, helped the elderly and had a job. Matt had to work hard just to get a B, but being a well-rounded person was just as important to him.”
Over the years, many students have expressed their gratitude to the Myers family, sharing how the event and scholarships have helped them.
“Our hope is that the recipients will look beyond the financial gain to an understanding of the importance of helping one another and supporting each other,” Chris says. “We’d like to encourage them to continue in those efforts.”
