Music Performance Features LA Phil Concertmaster
Martin Chalifour, principal concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform Wednesday, Feb. 8 with Cal Poly Pomona Professor and pianist Nadia Shpachenko. The event will take place at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall.
Chalifour, a violinist, began his Philharmonic tenure in 1995. The Canada native has performed chamber music with artists including YoYo Ma, Emmanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman and has appeared as soloist with conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Neville Marriner and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Chalifour is a professor at USC¿s Thornton School of Music.
Shpachenko has performed extensively in recitals and with orchestras in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She will perform the world premiere of two compositions for voice, toy piano, percussion and toy percussion, written specifically for the occasion by Cal Poly Pomona professors Dave Kopplin and Peter Yates.
