Neutra House Receives Grant for Renovations
Cal Poly Pomona has received a $10,000 award from the Los Angeles County Preservation Fund to renovate the Neutra VDL Studio and Residence in Silverlake.
The grant will go toward replacing two roofs and repairing the walls, damaged structural joints and substrate. The existing tar roofs on the 1939 garden house and the penthouse roof of the 1966 Neutra VDL Research II House will be removed and replaced with a flexible, UV resistant elastomeric compound and covered with gravel ballast to match the historic roofs. A drainage system will be installed to prevent further water infiltration problems.
Designed and built by architect Richard Neutra in 1932, the site represents three distinct periods of Neutra's evolving concept of modernism. The property was also the training ground for numerous modern architects and continues to serve as a pilgrimage site for architects and architectural critics worldwide.
The Neutra VDL Studio and Residence is owned by the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation and is under the stewardship of the College of Environmental Design. The university uses the property for teaching, research and scholarly activities.
