Engineering Students Win Awards for Research Posters
Two mechanical engineering seniors took first and second place at the NASA JPL Glenn Tsuyuki Student Poster Awards, which was part of the Thermal & Fluids Analysis Workshop hosted by NASA JPL/Caltech.
Matthew L. Samson’s “Thermal Management of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) using NX SST/ESC” and won first place. He worked with advisor and Mechanical Engineering Professor Kevin Anderson. Matthew DeVost, who also worked with Anderson, received second place for his poster on “Regeneratively Cooled Rocket Nozzle CFD Cooling System Analysis Using NX Flow.”
Their posters were graded by a panel of judges, and the students answered questions from judges and participants at the workshop, which was held Aug. 13-17 in Pasadena.
The Glenn Tsuyuki prize honors the former thermal manager at JPL who was an advocate of university/industry collaboration. Tsuyuki died unexpectedly in 2009, and his widow Tammy Tsuyuki presented the awards.
The students’ research interests are in the areas of advanced analysis tools (using Seimens NX simulation software donated to Cal Poly Pomona by Siemens PLM), advanced engineering design course, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics analyses.
