History Professor Zuoyue Wang published a guest editorial in the November issue of the American Physical Society's newsletter, APS News. The newsletter is distributed to about 48,000 APS members worldwide. In the editorial, "China, Sputnik, and American Science,
" Wang argues that the challenges facing the United States due to the rise of China and India bear some resemblance to those arising from the Soviet launching of the Sputnik satellite in 1957. In the present situation, the United States has close ties to China in many areas, and there is a need for the two countries to work together on critical global problems. Wang also calls for moving beyond Cold War thinking and for strong scientific and technological collaboration.
